A new home improvement fund targeted at low-income families has been introduced in Jalan Kayu constituency, reported TODAYonline.

Dubbed Home@JK, the fund was launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday (24 July) during Jalan Kayu Day 2016.

The programme will see eligible households receiving $2,000 worth of furnishings, fittings or minor repair works where needed.

At the event, Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Intan Azura Mokhtar revealed that a total of $42,000 has been raised by five sponsors, with the seed funding expected to benefit 21 households.

To date, the programme has helped two households, who were visited by Mr Lee yesterday.

Dr Intan noted that existing national schemes do not cover issues such as replacing broken furniture or windows, or repainting of the flat, which will be addressed by Home@JK, along with providing households with new furnishings.

She revealed that grassroot leaders and community partners will identify other households eligible for the programme during the weekly block visits.

“Of course, we need to engage them a little bit further because we need to find out exactly what are the areas in which they need help and where we can come in under Home@JK to help them,” added Dr Intan.

On whether the programme will be expanded to the whole Ang Mo Kio GRC, Dr Intan said: “Let’s take it one step at a time first, and let’s roll it out to our Jalan Kayu residents and see how the response is.”
