After 18 months, the mystery surrounding the “waterfall” lifts at a public housing block in Tiong Bahru has now been solved, reported TODAYonline.
Block 10A Boon Tiong Road is connected via a concrete ramp to an adjacent block, which is a multi-storey carpark. Every time it rains, water coming from the carpark’s roof garden is being carried by the ramp to the second floor lift lobby of the housing block, before flowing to the lift cars.
Based on the Housing and Development Board’s (HDB) findings from its preliminary investigations on the latest incident on Wednesday (8 February), the “water could not be discharged quickly enough through the discharge points at the roof garden, which could be choked”.
A spokesperson revealed that the HDB and the Tanjong Pagar Town Council are now working together to rectify the problem.
One of the solutions put forward by the town council is adding more drainage and a cover to the ramp to prevent rainwater from flowing into the lift lobby.
“We have also tried to ensure that the drainage at the roof garden is not clogged,” said the town council’s spokesperson, who assured residents that the lifts are “safe for use” since “the lift wires are covered up and our lift company regularly checks the safety of the lifts”.
Some residents of the 40-storey block said they do not use the lifts whenever they see water streaming down the shafts.
“With all that water, the electricity might trip,” said a 52-year-old kindergarten teacher who wanted to be known only as Mrs Nee.
