The government is expected to complete three neighbourhood renewal programmes in Woodlands by 2019 that involves upgrading a total of 66 blocks and their common areas, according to Sembawang GRC MP Amrin Amin, reported TODAYonline.
Some new facilities will also be constructed, and altogether, these would benefit over 4,700 households, he said during the sidelines of a ministerial visit on Sunday (11 June).
Two of these renewal programmes are targeted for completion by September, while the third will be ready by March 2019. Managed by the Housing Board, both focuses on block and precinct improvements, while the third one would benefit around 2,056 families.
The improvements include installation of additional ramps, fitness stations, playgrounds and basketball courts, along with the revamp of existing plazas and sports facilities.
For these three programmes, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) revealed that the government is spending a total of S$16.2 million.
Earlier on Sunday morning, Culture, Community and Youth Minister Grace Fu met some residents of Woodlands and checked on the estate’s new look.
“I’m very impressed by the upgrading that has been done. It’s not big structures, but little improvements here and there (that) make a lot of sense to the residents.”
“This is a relatively younger estate in the sense that there is a higher proportion of younger children and teenagers. So they’ve put in sporting equipment, facilities that meet the younger people’s needs. I’m very happy to see that improvements … cater to the needs of the people,” she added.
