Among
the various HDB estates in Singapore, Tampines - or Tampines New
Town - is the largest of them all. It is a densely populated region
and has its name derived from a large forest comprising of ‘tampines'
trees which grew in this region. Being one of the largest residential
areas of Singapore, the region is now home to more than 200,000
people residing in more than 52,000 flats spread across 4.24
kilometres.
