Currently I am living in a HDB flat for 20 years and have got a BTO flat which will be ready around end of 2024 as a second timer. So during the time before I get the keys for my second BTO flat, can I buy property overseas eg Malaysia?

Hi,

As for now, you can’t buy any overseas property and you may like to contact HDB for further confirmation.

No. You will be ineligible to purchase any residential properties until you have met your MOP for your BTO flat, whether locally or abroad.

Hi there, your MOP have reset the moment you have exercised for your second BTO. only in the event of you forfeiting your BTO will you be allow to get a foreign residential property. or else you can only purchase a foreign residential end of 2029 or 5 years after TOP of your second BTO. hope is clarifies your doubt. Hi,

1) The MOP for the current flat will not carry forward to the BTO.
2) Your MOP will start counting on the day you collect keys for your BTO.
3) So you can only buy a private property locally or overseas upon completing 5 yrs of occupying the BTO.

The idea is, to buy a HDB flat, you need to have a clean slate - you cannot own any other properties, be it local or overseas (other than 1 non-residential property)

You do have to sell your current HDB flat within 6 months of the key collection to your new HDB Flat.

Even though you have reached the MOP for your current flat and you are eligible to buy an overseas property right now.

But according to HDB rules, you’re not allowed to hold any overseas properties, as well as local private residential properties as a ‘soon to be’ new HDB flat owner.

If you want to buy an overseas property in Malaysia, you can do so, at the end of your new MOP.

Should you proceed to do that, you may risk not being able to collect the keys to your new BTO flat.

Do you need the sale proceeds of your current flat to pay for the new BTO flat? If yes, you might also wish to start marketing for sale around this time. This is to ensure that the funds are ready in time for your BTO flat.
