Yesterday, CapitaLand said it saved nearly $1.5 million because of green initiatives it made last year. These green initiatives were brought in as a part of the firm’s ISO certification for environmental management, which it successfully acquired for its operations in Singapore in 2007.
In the last year’s first 11 months, CapitaLand managed to reduce both its water and electricity consumption by 5% and 4% respectively for about 23 properties in Singapore.
After doing so, it has easily accomplished its overall goal of reducing its water and electricity consumption by 2% from 2007 to 2008.
According to Mr. Liew Mun Leong, the president and the chief executive of CapitaLand, the firm managed to surpass its aims by “creating an environmentally aware mindset throughout the company and implementing various green initiatives to reduce, reuse and recycle”.
It managed to make some savings by adapting a holistic approach in order to develop and manage its properties, office operations, and projects.
One of its systems contained in place was an environmental tracking programme on the Internet that monitors and checks about 150 properties in 60 cities scattered worldwide.
For 2009, CapitaLand’s target is to reduce the utility consumption for 3% at around 150 properties in Singapore and properties in foreign countries, saving almost $3.5 million during the process. Hopefully, the firm expects a good result before the year ends.
