Bedok Town Centre is set to receive a total makeover in the next four years, with the construction of private homes and a new integrated public transport hub. These new developments will rise on a land parcel that will also have 35,000 sq m of space for commercial use.
The seamless linking of Bedok bus interchange to the MRT station and the construction of nearly 475 private apartments beside the interchange are probably the most dramatic changes for residents.
Residents have welcomed the news that the interchange will be air-conditioned, while analysts expect that the apartments will be snapped up by home upgraders and young couples.
The Bedok Point mall is set to open in October, and stands near the new development, which will occupy a 2.49-ha plot, now taken up by a bus interchange.
Senior Minister S. Jayakumar, an MP for East Coast GRC, is confident that the projects’ proximity will provide residents “a rejuvenated and more vibrant town centre”. Together, “it will really be a total makeover”, said Mr. Jayakumar in an interview with The Straits Times.
Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Manpower and Trade and Industry, and MP for East Coast GRC’s Kampong Chai Chee ward, which includes the Bedok Town centre, said that “the new project will inject a lot of life, dynamism and excitement into the lives of people living in East Coast.”
HDB said the residential and commercial developments attracted nine bids when the sale tender closed. The top bid of approximately $790 million was made jointly by two subsidiaries of CapitaLand.
The successful bidder will be announced within two weeks, said a spokesperson for HDB.
With nearly 200,000 residents, Bedok is among the largest HDB estates in Singapore. It is one of the early HDB new towns, which saw its first high-rise developments in the 1970s.
