The 101-year-old Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital in Serangoon Road is set to become the largest single nursing home hospital by 2015 after adding 200 beds to its current 400, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong.
Established in 1910, the charity hospital runs both a community hospital and a nursing home. It now serves thousands of elderly patients in intermediate and long-term care and sees 360 in-patients and 3,500 patients a month in its Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre alone.
“Besides this expanded inpatient facility, senior residents living in the surrounding estates can also look forward to a one-stop centre providing a holistic and comprehensive suite of care services for the elderly, such as outpatient services, day rehabilitation, as well as traditional Chinese medicine,” said Mr. Gan.
Patrick Lee, Chairman of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital, said the expansion is expected to cost S$70 million and the hospital’s operating costs will increase by S$4 million to S$5 million.
“We have a building that faces Serangoon Road which is a landmark that people recognise because when they talk to the taxi-driver, they will say I want to go to Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital on Serangoon Road, and they take it as a landmark,” he added.
