Michael Syn will take on the role of Senior Vice President and Head of Derivatives at the Singapore Exchange (SGX), starting 1 March.
Mr. Syn will spearhead the growth of SGX in derivatives’ trading and distribution, “building on our position as an award-winning derivatives exchange”, said SGX. The exchange was named by Asia Risk as the Derivatives Exchange of the Year in 2010.
Mr. Syn will report to SGX President Gan Seow Ann. Prior to joining the exchange, he served as Chief Operating Officer at DBS Asset Management, overseeing the regional management of the company. He also worked at UBS London for six years, leading its UK derivatives risk.
Mr. Syn has an MA and a PhD in engineering from Cambridge University. He is a member of the advisory council of the Centre for Asset Management Research and Investments at NUS Business School, and an adviser to Temasek Holdings’ Wealth Management Institute. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Singapore Management University (SMU).
Derivatives are a main growth driver for the SGX. Derivatives market trading volume on the exchange reached 5.1 million contracts last month, up 2.3 percent year-on-year.
Derivatives trading volume also jumped 14.3 percent to 60.72 million contracts last year from 53.11 million contracts in 2009.
