PropertyGuru, Singapore’s leading property portal, recently organised a head-shaving event for Hair for Hope (HfH) 2011, in conjunction with the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) and the Braddell Heights CC Youth Club.
Held at the Braddell Heights CC Youth Club on 31 August, the charity drive witnessed 20 PropertyGuru staff and friends, including PropertyGuru co-founders Steve Melhuish and Jani Rautiainen, shave their heads as a symbolic show of support for children fighting cancer. So far, donations have reached over S$18,000 — well above the initial target of S$15,000.
“We were overwhelmed by people’s generosity,” said Steve Melhuish, Group Chief Executive of PropertyGuru.
“Each year, PropertyGuru raises money for charity in order to give a little back to society. I feel very strongly about children’s charities, so when I heard about the great work the CCF were doing, I wanted to help. Through the symbolic gesture of shaving our hair, we hope that the ‘Guru Shavees’ can raise awareness and give moral support to the poor kids with cancer,” he added.
The event also shed light on the plight of young cancer patients and showed support to the children and their families.
The CCF needs S$3.5 million annually to support children with cancer and their families. It is exclusively dependent on donations since it receives no government funding. Thus, participants aim to provide moral and financial support by shaving their heads and donating.
