Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) will soon update its building regulations to include reflectivity requirements for all kinds of facade materials, according to National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan.
In a blog post on Thursday, Mr Khaw said that the government has been receiving feedback on unwelcome glare from sunlight reflected from metal
roofs of other buildings, adding that this has raised concerns as more buildings are being built with glass and metal facades, and
are covered with metal roofs.
The current requirements only pertain to glass.
“Building designs are increasingly more complex and elaborate. With an increasing number of developers and architects exploring the use of less conventional materials, some form of check and balance is necessary so that design does not come at the cost of comfort and safety,” the Minister said.
He also noted that the updated regulation will help “to ensure that new designs do add to the neighbourhood, allowing all residents, users and commuters to enjoy”, without inconveniencing anyone.
