City officials in London, a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada have issued a $3,500 (S$4,233) fine and probation order on the owners of two homes for exceeding the maximum permitted number of bedrooms in a residential property.
Located at 1703 and 1709 Beaverbrook Avenue, both houses (pictured) are zoned for residential use and can have only up to five bedrooms. However, authorities found that they collectively had 17 bedrooms occupied by 32 people after a complaint was made in January.
“This was one of the most intensified single detached dwellings we have seen. Based on a bed count, a minimum of 32 occupants resided at these homes in this developing area,” said Orest Katolyk, Manager of Licensing and Municipal Law Enforcement Services.
The additional bedrooms were mostly in the basement and were occupied by employees at an Asian grocery store run by the owners. “There were basically mattresses everywhere,” Katolyk noted.
These rooms were demolished shortly after the city conducted their inspection in January.
“Our role is to protect the amenity, stability and character of London’s neighbourhoods through the enforcement of city by-laws,” added Katolyk.
