The National Parks Board (NParks), through the Garden City Fund, dedicated three Heritage Trees in the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) to City Developments Limited (CDL), Sembcorp Industries Ltd (Sembcorp) and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).
This is the third time Heritage Trees are dedicated to recognise organisations or individuals who have made a significant donation to the Garden City Fund and contributed to the greening of Singapore.
CDL made a contribution of SGD$2 million, in cash and in kind, for the CDL Green Gallery @ SBG Heritage Museum, which will feature botanical or greening-related exhibits. The 314 sq m building is also Singapore’s first zero energy Green Gallery, and features extensive use of eco-friendly designs materials.
Kwek Leng Joo, CDL’s Deputy Chairman, said, “To be dedicated with the Mengkulang Tree is an immense honour for CDL. This unique tree, the first plant of its kind known to science, resonates with CDL’s rich heritage as Singapore’s property pioneer and our firm belief in sustainable development.”
Besides designing and developing sustainable properties, Kwek added CDL has also been conserving mature trees at its development sites, and engaging stakeholders through eco-outreach initiatives.
