Singapore has been ranked among the top 10 green cities, according to the Global Green Economy Index (GGEI).
Released by US-based environmental consultancy Dual Citizen, the fourth edition of the GGEI covers 60 countries and 70 cities ranked by a survey of global experts.
The expert survey collected perceptions of cities on four areas, Leadership and Climate Change; efficiency sectors; markets and investment; and environment and natural capital.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong unveiled the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint (SSB) 2015, which outlines a national vision with new plans to create a more liveable and sustainable future for Singaporeans.
The highlights of SSB 2015 initiatives include implementing “eco-smart” towns where smart technology and eco-friendly features are embedded into towns and homes. Singapore also aims to be a Zero Waste Nation by reducing our consumption, and reusing and recycling all materials.
Additionally, businesses will be encouraged to adopt greener practices, as the city-state aims to be a hub for the cutting-edge business of sustainable development.
The SSB was first released in 2009, and it maps out strategies for Singapore’s sustainable development. According to the government, Singapore is on track to meet or exceed the 2020 and 2030 targets set out in 2009.
