Singapore’s historic Civic District is getting a makeover with the bulk of building works to be completed next year for Singapore’s 50th birthday, according to National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan.
In a blog post, he said this is the government’s SG50 gift to Singaporeans and will considerably enhance visitors’ experience to monuments around the Padang.
He explained that the full potential of monuments in the area were not being realised, but through consultation and reflection, there is now a clear plan to create an integrated arts, culture and lifestyle precinct.
For instance, Empress Place will become pedestrian-friendly while the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall will be integrated into a seamless park, with opportunities for outdoor events such as concerts.
At the same time, a spacious walkway will be introduced along St. Andrew’s Road in front of the National Gallery. One side of Anderson Bridge will be converted to a pedestrian footpath, while Connaught Drive will be converted to a two-way street.
To allow visitors to sit and enjoy the waterfront views and river activities, stepped plazas will be created at Queen Elizabeth Walk and in front of the Asian Civilisations Museum.
According to Mr Khaw, these enhancements were first unveiled during the Draft Master Plan 2013 exhibition and received very good response from the public.
“We will now put ideas into reality and further elevate our Civic District as a premier arts and cultural hub, for all Singaporeans to enjoy.”
