Opened in 1932, the Alkaff Upper Serangoon Mosque (pictured) has been gazetted as the 68th National Monument in Singapore by the National Heritage Board (NHB).
Located in Pheng Geck Avenue, the mosque was established by the Alkaffs, one of the prominent Arab families in Singapore.
It is the sixth mosque to be gazetted as a national monument.
Although most of the earliest structure has been retained, it has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years.
The most recent upgrading works completed in March this year expanded the mosque’s prayer space, while ramps and a lift were installed to provide better access for the elderly.
The local Muslim community living in the Potong Pasir, Bendemeer, Kallang Bahru and Bidadari areas continue to use the mosque, and it can accommodate up to 2,500 worshippers.
“With the preservation, Alkaff Upper Serangoon Mosque will continue to be a hub of activities for the local Muslim community,” said Mohd Helmy Isa, Director of Mosques at the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), which manages the mosque.
