Cities around the world are greening upwards, with Singapore being one of the pioneers in the skyrise greenery movement, said National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan in a blog post on Saturday.
The city-state is currently home to 61ha of rooftop gardens.
“This is no mean feat considering that we only actively embarked on greening our roofs in the last five years,” said Mr Khaw, adding that Chicago has a longer history of rooftop gardens but has only 50ha.
Meanwhile, the super trees in Gardens by the Bay broke new ground and created something endearing for Singaporeans.
Singapore’s achievements in this field have also been documented in a book by National University of Singapore Professor Dr Tan Puay Yok titled “Vertical Garden City, Singapore”.
Looking ahead, Mr Khaw said that Singapore will continue to contribute to this emerging global effort.
He noted that the country is getting more buildings with bolder skyrise greenery designs, such as the recently completed Park Royal @ Pickering and the upcoming CapitaGreen building.
Moreover, the modern integrated development near Admiralty MRT station “will soon ground-break and show what can be achieved within HDB estates”.
Mr Khaw said he looks forward “to seeing more skyrise greenery in our City in a Garden”.
