Singapore will have the world’s first four-in-one train and bus depot, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a statement on 15 August.
Measuring 36 hectares, this first-of-its-kind depot will house 550 buses, as well as 220 trains for the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), East-West Line (EWL) and Downtown Line (DTL). It will be built with the TEL.
“While building such a depot involves complex planning and significant engineering challenges, by integrating the train and bus depots, we will save 44 hectares of land, or an area of approximately 60 football fields,” LTA said in a statement.
According to media reports, the depot will cost around $6.2 billion.
In addition, the alignment of the DTL3 Extension (DTL3e) has finalised and this new extension will be 2.2 kilometres long.
The working names for two new stations are Sungei Bedok and Xilin, while the third will be linked to the Expo station, currently on the EWL.
The upcoming Sungei Bedok station will serve as an interchange with the East Coast stretch of TEL.
The DTL3e will improve public transport accessibility to the Changi Business Park and Expo areas and help relieve crowding on the EWL.
