S'pore developers lead the way in sustainability

Property titans make up the top three companies from Singapore on Channel NewsAsia (CNA)’s Sustainability Ranking.

City Developments Limited (CDL) is ranked second among the top 100 sustainable companies in Asia; while the next company from Singapore on the list is CapitaLand Limited which ranked at #17, followed by Keppel Land at #25.

CNA lauds CDL as one of the few real estate companies to integrate life cycle analysis into its value chain. For all new developments, the developer sets aside up to five percent of construction costs for green design elements such as recycled or sustainable building materials.

CDL Deputy Chairman Kwek Leng Joo said as buildings globally account for 40 percent of energy consumption and 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, there is an urgent need for the industry to mitigate its impact on the environment.

The company also gives preference to ISO 14001 certified suppliers, indicating a well-integrated approach to “green construction.”

Kwek said, “To conserve as we construct is a vision we have held since 1995. We have made social, economic and environmental sustainability an integral part of our business. From first-of-its-kind green building innovations, to industry-changing methods that reduce waste and raise productivity, we see unlimited possibilities in the spaces we develop.”

For example, CDL’s commercial building, 11 Tampines Concourse (pictured) is the first CarbonNeutral® development in Asia Pacific and Singapore.

Meanwhile, Capitaland has set ambitious green building goals and annually discloses progress toward these goals. Over three-quarters of the company’s existing Singapore properties are Green Mark certified.

Similarly, a part of Keppel Land’s property portfolio is invested in sustainable buildings, most notably its Ocean Financial Centre in Singapore which received the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum rating as well as Platinum LEED certification.

The results were announced during the launch of the ranking at the CSR Asia Summit in Hong Kong on 16 September.
