Out of Singapore’s 3.87 million residents, 431,600 or 11.2 percent are at least 65 years old, said media reports based on the latest demographics released by the Department of Statistics yesterday.
Location-wise, the highest concentrations of elderly can found in the downtown area and older estates.
In fact, 20 percent of the residents in downtown areas like Tanjong Pagar (pictured) and Bugis are within this age bracket, while the proportion in established housing estates such as Outram, Sungei Kadut, Rochor and Bukit Merah are between 17.6 percent and 19.1 percent.
On the other hand, the largest concentrations of children up to five years old are found in relatively newer estates.
Areas with the high proportion of younger residents are Punggol, Changi. Sengkang, Sembawang and Jurong West.
In terms of population size, Bedok remains as the most populated town just like in the previous years with a populace of 293,110. Jurong West bagged the second spot for having a population of 271,930, followed by Tampines at 258,810.
Taking the title of Singapore’s fastest growing town, Punggol has 10,070 more residents in 2014 versus last year’s figure.
