One factor necessary for achieving sustainable development is the well-planned usage of land to help the people, according to Singapore’s Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, reported Channel NewsAsia.
For example, the Singapore government has set aside plenty of land for public housing so that every family can have their own home. In this way, they can also feel that the limited land here is being equitably used so that everyone would have a share in this precious resource.
In addition, more public parks, park connectors and other green spaces are being developed as “those are important ways of raising the standard of living,” he said. He explained that vision of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to turn Singapore into a Garden City was inspired by the lush gardens he saw in private homes and bungalows.
“Lee Kuan Yew said access to beautiful plants and trees and space for children to play should be available to everyone. Hence, we embarked on a huge effort…to plant trees and shrubs all over Singapore.”
He said this during the 10th International Conferences on South Asia, organised by the Institute of South Asian Studies. The event, which was saw 300 guests, is holding talks on politics and the economics of land in the region. It began yesterday and will end today.
