A new concept bus stop along Jurong Gateway Road aims to make daily commuting less boring, with free Wi-Fi, handphone charging points, e-books download, bicycle parking and even a swing.
Conceived by a group of architects from DP Architects (DPA), Project Bus Stop re-imagines how people transit, interact and socialise in this public space, revealed a joint statement by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, Land Transport Authority, National Parks Board and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
The prototype bus stop also features interactive smart boards that provide content and services such as bus arrival timings, a green roof and artwork by local illustrator Lee Xin Li.
“We are looking forward to see how commuters use, experience and enjoy this new setting. Hopefully the community will appreciate how bus stops can be an extension of their social environments, as sites of possibilities, fun and enrichment,” said DPA’s Director Seah Chee Huang, who spearheaded the initiative.
Project Bus Stop’s features will be in operation for a year from this month, with the public encouraged to give feedback at AUDE@ura.gov.sg.
In a blog post, National Development Minister Lawrence Wong said: “We will review the public response to the features and services to see if they should continue to be operational.”
Wong shared that he was very encouraged to see the young architects come forward with their ideas to make public spaces more vibrant.
“This is why URA has an initiative called “Our Favourite Place” to provide funding support to individuals and groups with ideas to activate and enliven our public spaces,” he said.
He added that “planning our future city” is not just a job for urban planners.
“We all can play a role in shaping our streets and public spaces. The more we do so, the more we strengthen our sense of ownership, identity and emotional connection to Singapore our home.”
