I had specifically requested my agent for a flat devoid of any high noise or commotion given it was Covid lockdowns & people predominantly work from home, hence it was important for me. My agent showed me a condo, after me reiterating my need, he assured me of the calmness in the flat.
After I moved in that week, the very next day I was woken up by a massive hydraulic ground drilling noise. While I disregarded it, it kept continuing every single day, whole day. Then it came to my realisation that the building opposite my flat unit is under renovation. Massive machines conducting demolition, continuous drilling, constant bull dozer runs tearing down bricks floor by floor accompanied by workers chipping concretes. My life became miserable with such loud noise every day specially since my unit also doesn't have balcony which could have acted as additional layer of barrier. It became impossible to work, I had to travel all the way to office & other cafes with my laptop to work increasing my travel expenses & food expenses when whole of Singapore was able to enjoy work from home.
Matter became worse when even of Saturday & Sundays the noise became unbearable impacting my work as well as I couldn't get proper sleep. Infact at times I had to book rooms at hotel for getting sleep. I raised this to the agent who made my life miserable by mis-selling this unit by intentionally hiding information for his commission. He kept saying demolition will stop, but it went on for 1.5 years. Given it was during Covid peak, it was difficult to also again change place. Landlord was totally not helpful as well. He said he will fix a noise cancellation window or a material to block this. But gave up after receiving the quote from the vendor. Landlord is also similar to agent acting out of self interest to make money by putting tenants through a miserable time. Not that demolition & construction of the building is done, for the first time in 1.5 years I'm able to have some sleep, the agent & landlord is asking for additional SG$1000 on top of what I'm paying as rent given the market. Even keeping side the unethical & immoral way in which the agent & landlord pushed me with this rental unit, at least on humanitarian grounds I requested that they increase the rental by additional $300 to which they denied are asking me to vacate at a very 'convenient' time given that construction noise is over. I was under immense stress because of my agent to whom I specially asked for a calm place, but he went overboard and sold a place just facing the construction for his commission. Seeking the help of the community here and your thoughts on this agent & the landlord who can go to any extent to make money.
