This is an agreement between you and the agent on the remuneration.
If you do not agree with the commission payable on rental renewal and your agent insists, then you can opt to look for other tenants through other agent since current agent insists on the commission on renewal, but do highlight to the next agent that you are unwilling to pay renewal commission.
FYI, I am doing a rental renewal for recently and the renewal is into its 5th or 6th time and Landlord is paying me the renewal commission, as I have been following up on matters that can be arising out from the property throughout the course of the rental period. This is similar for many of the rental properties that I am handling. For landlords who are unwilling to pay the renewal commission, I will usually step away and wash hands after the handover of property to tenant and leave the landlord and tenant to settle any issues arising of the property directly.
