Public housing in the 21st century must evolve to meet changing needs, said National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan.
However, HDB’s core mission of building cohesive communities and providing Singaporeans with affordable quality homes remains unchanged.
During his speech at the International Housing Conference in Singapore, Mr. Mah noted that due to shifting demographics, HDB will face increasing challenges. These include an aging population, which will require further innovations in building design or housing policies.
In addition, the growing number of new Singapore citizens requires greater integration efforts.
According to Mr. Mah, affluence and rapid globalization may also incite other lifestyle changes, and with it, increased expectations of what public housing can offer.
Singapore also faces the gradual aging profile of HDB towns, which requires an immediate need to upgrade, rejuvenate and redevelop older estates.
Mr. Mah said that HDB must meet these challenges and pursue its goal of achieving economic, environmental and social sustainability. This will contribute to the overall quest of Singapore to provide a healthy and green living environment through careful long-term planning.
HDB has achieved much for Singapore over the last half century. It has earned significant international recognition, including the UN Public Service Award.
And for the next 50 years and beyond, Mr. Mah urged HDB to continue its relentless pursuit for sustainable public housing.
