URA launches the Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk

3 Jan 2012

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has officially launched The Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk – a 2.1km walk that features three distinct segments – Bukit Chermin Boardwalk, Berlayer Creek and Alexandra Garden Trail.

The recreational project, conceptualised and developed by the URA and to-be managed by the National Parks Board, was unveiled at a community event by the Minister for Trade and Industry, Lim Hng Kiang.

The Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk connects the Southern Ridges and the Southern Waterfront. It stretches along Alexandra Road running from Depot Road to Telok Blangah Road. It also passes through the Berlayer Creek mangrove area and borders the foothills of Bukit Chermin.

Information panels are placed at various intervals along the Walk to provide visitors with information on the area’s rich biodiversity and nearby attractions.

The 830-metre Alexandra Garden Trail connects to the area’s key recreational destinations including the Forest Walk, Alexandra Arch and the Gillman Village’s future arts cluster.

Among the few remaining mangrove areas in the city, the 960-metre ‘eco-educational’ Berlayer Creek is now accessible to pedestrians through the Labrador Park MRT station next to it.

The panoramic Keppel Harbour greets the 330-metre Bukit Chermin Boardwalk with sightings of rich ecosystems of crustaceans, corals and seagrass on the shoreline.

“I am very happy that more residents will be able to enjoy this latest recreational destination at Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk. The URA has always placed great importance on planning for recreational options for Singaporeans, which is why we announced an island-wide Leisure Plan in 2008 that showcases a diverse range of leisure opportunities for all to enjoy,” said Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer of the URA.
