A five-storey residential block in China (pictured) which made news worldwide for oddly standing in the middle of a new road, has been demolished after the remaining residents finally accepted the government’s compensation of 260,000 yuan (S$50,874), according to media reports.
Chen Xuecai, village chief of Xiayangzhang, said homeowners Luo Baogen, 67 and his wife accepted the offer which allowed for the demolition of the property last Saturday.
Luo had initially refused to accept the government’s standard offer of 220,000 yuan (S$43,029), claiming that he had just completed his house at 600,000 yuan (S$117,353).
Reports did not elaborate why Luo finally accepted the compensation, but Chen said that he voluntarily permitted the demolition as he was getting tired of all the media attention.
“Luo Baogen received dozens of people from the media every day and his house stands in the centre of the road. So he decided to demolish the house,” Chen explained.
The property sat in the middle of a yet to open road that leads to a new railway station.
