Speculation about the world coming to an end has intensified in recent days, with some people believing it could happen this Friday, 21 December – the last day on the ancient Mayan calendar.
The rumours have inspired Liu Qiyuan, a furniture maker to design a home that may survive an apocalypse, should there be one. Aptly named “Noah’s Ark” (pictured), the spherical-shaped homes can float on water in case of floods or tsunamis and are powered by outboard engines, reported AsiaOne.
Each pod can house up to 14 people and stores water, food and emergency supplies that will last two weeks. They come with an air pump and filter to combat airborne hazards as well.
The seven specially-designed homes also come with a periscope for looking out and sufficient insulation against the cold weather.
Liu said the pods are shaped like ping pong balls, which have a thick outer layer and can withstand much pressure. Reportedly, the pods can withstand 1,000m high waves.
Liu said he was inspired to design the “indestructible” homes upon his daughter’s request and has invested large amounts of money into this project with the help of neighbours and friends.
