Batam resort eyes film crews, celebrities

The upcoming movie-themed resort in Batam will be more than a holiday facility for tourists and residents.

Developed by Singapore-based Infinite Studios and Indonesian property player Landstar Development, The Scene is touted as the first liveable and filmable movie town in Asia. The luxury estate and holiday resort, designed by veteran Hollywood scene artist Peter Collias, will also house celebrities.

Infinite Studios CEO Mike Wiluan revealed the concept for The Scene came from the studios’ interest in constructing more backlot facilities, along with need for luxury hospitality infrastructure that will accommodate celebrities and visiting film crews.

“The idea of bringing the two together, in a one unique destination, sort of evolved from there,” he explained.

Additionally, electrical infrastructure and various support systems will be installed throughout the property in order to facilitate film and TV productions.

“We’ll definitely do some shooting there. Maybe as you’re having your morning coffee out on the terrace at the cafe, there’s a commercial shoot happening down the road — that offers something different and exciting,” added Wiluan.

Situated in the Indonesian island of Batam, the 340,000 sq ft project comprises 295 low-rise condotels and 50 retail units. There is also a variety of themed micro-neighbourhoods that will serve as working studio backlots.

The Scene will be built in phases, with overall completion targeted by December 2018.
