East Coast Park may have new animal adoption centre

East Coast Park is known for its beaches, but soon it may be home to a new animal community.

There could soon be a new rent-free community animal adoption centre at East Coast Park, as this idea is currently being discussed by the Ministry of National Development (MND) and the Kembangan-Chai Chee grassroots, according to media reports last week.

It is hoped this upcoming facility will encourage more in Singapore to adopt rather than buy a pet. Envisioned as a space where dogs, cats and rabbits can roam freely, visitors can interact with the animals with the option of bringing them home.

Possible site for the project and other details have not been revealed.

However, the Cat Welfare Society (CWS) and House Rabbit Society of Singapore have reportedly submitted design ideas for the centre. CWS proposed housing 10 cats and three humans in a space as big as a one-room flat with see-through glass or acrylic panels which would allow people to watch how the cats socialises with humans.

As animal shelters are often in rather remote areas, this new facility in a place like East Coast Park is seen to be beneficial as it is more accessible to more people.
