Construction work has begun on two new MRT stations on the $24 billion Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).
The ground-breaking of the Lentor and Mayflower stations on Saturday morning was officiated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is also an MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC.
In a subsequent Facebook post, he said both stations will benefit the area’s residents.
Dwellers in Lentor and Kebun Bahru will enjoy enhanced accessibility and connectivity to the central business district when the two stations are completed by 2020.
But PM Lee added that the entire TEL project will take slightly longer to finish. The last few stations on the 43-km long line will likely be ready in 2024.
The future line is the country’s sixth, and comes 27 years after the government opened the North-South Line.
Meanwhile, there are plans to further expand the MRT network.
“By 2030, our network will double. 8 in 10 households will be within a 10-minute walk from a train station,” said Mr Lee.
