Tracing the development of the region, the Jurong Heritage Trail was officially launched last Saturday by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, according to media reports.
This is the National Heritage Board’s (NHB) 13th trail that features 12 heritage sites including Pandan Reservoir, Jurong Lake and Jurong Hill.
Visitors can learn more about the transformation of Jurong from its early days of gambier and rubber plantations to becoming Singapore’s first industrial estate.
“The stereotype of Jurong is that it is merely an industrial town, but through our research we realised there is so much more,” said NHB spokesperson Stefanie Tham.
The launch also witnessed the opening of a new exhibition at Taman Jurong’s community museum. Titled My School is Cool: An Exhibition of Educational Institutions in Jurong, the exhibition explores the history of schools in the area since the 1930s and reveals how these institutions adapted to meet the challenges facing the country.
Mr Tharman noted that such efforts are worthwhile.
“Most important is that the memories of our pioneers and the generation after them that will keep our culture going… Each generation will have its own memories and each generation will keep its memories for the future generations,” he shared.
