Can my sister who is a Singaporean age over 35 buy a flat to own then rent it out while she is working overseas. There is no way she can stay in Singapore for the 3 years before renting. Is it advisable to buy?

Hi Sabrina, For every HDB flat purchased there is a minimum occupation period (MOP) of between 3 to 5 years.

For rental there are a list of reasons that HDB allows a tenant to rent out their HDB flat. Being overseas is one acceptable reason. However, the fact that the request is within the MOP means that you will need to seek HDB approval befor renting out. Even if HDB allows the rental, you will be subject to the MOP after the lease.

Perhaps it will be better to meet up to discuss further your circumstances before deciding.
