Hi there,
Welcome (in advance) to Singapore! And congratulations on your fast-approaching new student life here.
There are indeed some options for you with a $1,500 budget. You'll find most of these in the HDB (Studio or 2-room) apartments (or in Singapore lingo, HDB Flats). You'll have your basic necessities here like bedroom, shower and kitchenette. However, you might like to choose districts where the international student community are more prevalent, such as Dover and Clementi.
Do note that HDB flats are subject to a "non-citizen quota" at the neighbourhood level AND block level. Which means that even though the flat is available, the landlord may not be allowed to rent it to you due to HDB policies. This is just to ensure that residents within public housing facilities remain culturally diverse.
And in case you're not fully acquainted with our acronyms yet, HDB stands for Housing Development Board, which is the Government agency here that manages our public housing.
The next type of housing you can consider are the condominiums. There are much less $1,500 options, but they're still there! If you've figured out how to filter the rental listings on PropertyGuru by price (and make sure to select "entire unit" so you don't end up staying with the landlord), then these will be easy enough to sort through. Condos will usually have swimming pools, gyms and tennis courts, but not all do though. Great thing that PropertyGuru does is that it reviews and shows you the facilities that each condominium has, so be sure to have a look through before deciding if you want to make an offer.
