High-net worth Chinese snap up luxury properties

5 Jun 2014

The Luxury Property Show (LPS) Beijing 2014 saw an estimated US$90 million worth of lavish properties sold over three days.

Over 4,700 highly-affluent individuals from Beijing and Northern China attended the invitation-only event on 16 to 18 May in China’s capital city.

Luxury properties worldwide ranging from US$1 million to 50 million were showcased by over 80 exhibitors from 25 countries, including property agents and developers such as Christie’s Real Estate, Savills, Knight Frank, Alain Pinel, DTZ and Raimon Land.

The most popular countries at the exhibition Australia, Spain, Canada, Thailand and United Kingdom.

Kevin Corbett, CEO of Beijing Sotheby’s International Realty, said, “The leads that we have generated as result of the show have been substantial. We have always known the power of this brand but being connected with LPS has really helped us.”

Bunny Wang, International Properties Director at Colliers International said, “The quality of the visitors is high-end and a lot of visitors are very interested in overseas properties.”

Visitors had the chance to learn more about the myriad of luxury properties available, from private islands, historical chateaux, ski resort mansions, modern luxury apartments and properties with private golf courses.

There were also over 50 seminars and forums which provided insider’s tip on investing in specific real estate markets globally.

Olivier de Treglode, founder and organiser of LPS said buyers now have very precise expectations of what they are looking for. “As the China market becomes more mature, high-end Chinese buyers are becoming more demanding. They are now increasingly more informed, educated and aware of the global property markets,” he said.

A Beijing-based investor surnamed Zhao found LPS to be a much easier way to invest in properties. He said, “It’s my third visit to LPS. I previously invested in Australian real estate, but I’m now looking for properties in London. What is great with LPS is that you can have face-to-face contacts with realtors, and in a relaxed and 5-star environment. I have time to sit down and talk.”

The next edition of LPS will be held in Shanghai from 12 to 14 December at the Marriott Shanghai City Centre, with over 100 exhibitors from more than 30 countries including new countries such as Mexico, Latvia, Caribbean, Switzerland, Croatia and Montenegro. Over 5,000 visitors are expected at the 8th edition of LPS.
