Dear Shakir,

Most landlords in Singapore are private landlords, where they will have certain preferences on who they like to be the tenants of their place. This preference could be due to their past experiences in dealing with tenants, which probably led them to decide that they do not want to deal with tenants of certain ethnic or nationalities, therefore when prospective tenants call in to make enquiry on a property available for rent, there will be a filtering process.

    Dear Geryl,

This is ok. And in this case, it is better for the landlord and agent to post an advert specifying that the landlord is only looking for only a certain type of nationality or gender. Completely understandable.
Dear Shakir,

I shared your frustration in finding rooms or unit for rent.

However, especially for room rental, landlord has to live with tenant together.
Thus communications is a critical for each other to be able to live harmony.

Although most of the people in Singapore are biligual, but properly not at all fluent. Thus there are certain restriction imposed upon agent to ensure tenant invited are suitable.

During my course of work, there are certain nationality were mentioned to have or not to have.
Not everyone hold same stereotype towards nationality.

I believed you would prefer to have understanding landlord in order not to add to your burden from the stress coming from work.
An accomodation is not only just to sleep and wash up, it is also a place where you could rest upon.
Thus suitable tenants and landlords are important.

You will find your good match once you open up your search. Singapore is not so big that it takes more than hours from point to point.
As long as you schedule your routine right, you should have wider choice that meets your criteria.

Best of luck!!!

Regards.

    Dear CK,

I am not frustrated. It was the first call I made to a property agent here on property guru and found the question on nationality very inappropriate. Of course, suitable tenants and landlords are very important and can be identified based on some screening questions on their job profile, their day-to-day living standard, character, behaviour, etc. , what they expect and what the landlord and neighbours expect etc. But to judge a prospective tenant based on nationality is wrong.
