Hi

I am moving to Singapore in one month

I try to contact some agents to search for an apartment in Singapore.

There is one that suggest me to pay some "engagement fee" so that the tenant agent can begin searching for apartment. This fee will then be offset against the commission fee if I sign for the apartment with this agent

I would like to ask if it is normal to ask for engagement fee ? Most of my friends in Singapore said that they never paid anything like that

Hi Mr. HS,

What you can do is search for the apartment via website or PropertyGuru and arrange with the landlord's agent for viewing.
If you want to engage an agent to search and bring you around for viewing, there will be agent commission which the tenant will need to pay. Let me know what type of housing accomodation you are looking for? Your budget etc? I try to help, no engagement fee but will have agent fee if the deal is closed. Good morning,

For rental of apartment or unit, if the monthly rental is more than $3000 and the lease is more than a year, most tenants do not need to pay commission. However, there are cases where the landlord agent is unable to share their commission, the tenant agent will then have to collect their commission from their tenants. As for the engagement fee, it would be an individual practise as tenants nowadays prefer agent hoping. These would likely mean that the effort of the agent who have being serving you will be wasted should you opt to look for another agent.
