I have engaged an agent to sell my flat and it was just sold. I have not found a place to move in so he is also helping me to find a flat to buy. May I know what are the commission feea payable to my agent? Do I have to pay him both seller and buyer commission since he has helped me to sell my current flat and is now helping me to look for a suitable unit and go for house viewing with me sometimes?

Hi,

1) Your agent is providing service to you. It is obvious he should be paid for the rendered.
2) In current market practice, selling of HDB flat is 2%, buying of HDB flat is 1%. Though sometime there are variation on this standard rate.
3) Some charge more for additional service on top the normal service provided. An example of selling, commission can be as high as 7%, dependent on what is in the selling package.
4) Because this is a free market, therefore there is always room for negotiable. The most important is both of you must feel comfortable once agreed.
5) Buying and selling house is a happy matter. It is a start of something major happening in one's whole life.
6) Whether the experience is good or bad, you will never forget it after many many years.
7) If you are buying a private property, you will not need to pay him any commission. This is also current market practice.
