It is not necessary.
The purpose for agent is a helper, to help sourcing for units, arranging for viewing, and prevent any mis-communication during contracting.

It is not necessary but good to have 1 to represent you such that he/she can protect your interest in terms of negotiating for the right deal as well as assisting you should there be dispute arising from the rental.
