I purchased a BTO under the Married Child Priority Scheme and live with my husband and MIL. Due to family conflict, my husband and I wish to live separately from MIL as it is affecting my mental health. We still have 2.5 years to MOP. What are my options? Am I able to rent a condo now? Are we able to appeal to HDB to rent an HDB within 2km of our current flat?

Hi,

1) Married Child Priority Scheme is such:
Under the Married Child Priority Scheme (MCPS), you will be given priority in the balloting of applications if you apply for a flat:
(a) within 4 km of an HDB flat which your parents/married child physically occupy; or
(b) within 4 km of a private property owned by your parents/ married child or their immediate family member, where they physically occupy.

2) This scheme works similarly to PHG (Proximity Housing Grant), meaning that both parties must stay within a 4km radius during the MOP.
3) Your MIL can rent another unit within 4km in order to comply with the regulations.
4) But if you rent another unit rather than staying in the current BTO, your MOP will stop counting. And you will never be able to complete your MOP by staying in a rental unit.
5) Alternative if your MIL does not want to shift out, then your only option is to sell your BTO before meeting the MOP.
6) You are not eligible for renting from the HDB while owning an HDB flat.

Hi Mdm,

I'm sorry to learn about your situation. Hope you're coping better now.

You may wish to rent another unit to prevent further conflicts. If you have intentions to sell off the flat, you may also wish to write in to HDB to seek approval for early waiver of MOP. Decision will be on a case-by-case basis.

I am experienced and well-versed in both HDB and private transactions. I will be able to assist you in your property plans. Please get in touch with me for a more in-depth discussion.
