My husband and I own a HDB EA and my mum owns a HDB 3 rm flat. As I'm the only child , my mother suggested that I upgrade to a condo/EC and in the future I can inherit her HDB and keep both the HDB and condo/EC. Both our units are fully paid
and have met the MOP.

First question: will I be able to keep both the HDB and condo/EC?

Second question: As we do not have much cash and cpf and do not wish to take up too much loan. Can we sell both our EA and my mum's 3 rm flat , and then my husband as a sole owner to get a smaller BTO/resale while my mother and I get a condo/EC?

Hi Vodka,

If the HDB is willed to you, and you are a private property owner by then and Singaporean, typically you should be able to keep both once your mum passes on, although it is still subject to HDB review and approval.

You have to buy the hdb with your husband name as you guys are considered one family nucleus entity, and must apply together. You cannot buy just with your mother's name.

Upon inheriting the HDB, it will still be subject to HDB approval to retain the unit after their review. For your 2nd question, unfortunately if we based on existing regulations, you will only be eligible to purchase a condo/EC after the smaller BTO/resale unit your husband purchases under his sole name has met the 5 years MOP as you will be considered as an essential occupier for the HDB.

Hi Vodka,

The question on whether you are able to keep both the private property and the HDB flat depends on when your mum bought the HDB flat and whether it was a subsidized flat. We will need to check with HDB on this to confirm.

As for your 2nd question, it is not possible because as a married couple, you and your husband will need to purchase the HDB flat together and therefore you will not be able to get a private property with your mum.

For your case, I would suggest that you upgrade to a private condo and get your mum to stay with you. She can then rent out your 3 room HDB flat to generate some passive income for her retirement.
