I wanted to rent a room after a viewing, the owner told us that he will be selecting tenants and it’s not first come first serve so I decided to just tell the agent our decision that I am interested. However the agent kept pressing for me to send a photo of my IC front and back. This is before I’m even confirmed to be a tenant and before any contract, by the way. Is this normal? I kept trying to compromise by offering to send a photo and other details first but the agent kept ignoring it and asking me to send my IC photos. His reasoning is “to send to owner” but I don’t really see why it’s necessary to send such sensitive info before a contract? The owner is a nice and understanding person and the room is great but this agent is being a very unprofessional roadblock for us. Any advice is appreciated.

We are governed by the PDPA therefore the risk of providing your IC pictures are relatively safe unless the agent misuse the details. In order to provide the full picture of tenant profile to the landlord for their consideration, this is often what we will do,get the tenant to send in these information for verification before sending to the landlord. Otherwise if we only find out that profile is different from what we have anticipated, there could be additional time loss in searching for the next tenant or even an opportunity loss if there were competing offers but landlord decides on your offer but only find out that the profile is not accurate.

I'm sorry to hear about how you feel. Agents require the data from your NRIC to screen against various government websites for security reasons, it is also a part of our due diligence. The picture part of your NRIC is to ensure that you are who you say you are, and all the other details tally.

It could be the way that the agent requested it from you, and you felt that it was unsafe. I do assure you that we have to adhere to PDPA, and the details of your NRIC will not be given nor handled lightly.
