Can my landlord deny me access to basic utilities if I do not obey to her increase in rent when the contract has not ended?
I’m renting a room. Landlord is in the same house. She rents out 3 other rooms.
I only signed the contract a month ago. This month she suddenly said she wants to increase the rent next month because of a rise in utility fees. Which is just her excuse to get more profit out of us because I calculated and there’s no way her fees increased that much. I asked her to show me the bills and she said to not ask about it and just pay more.
I’m a student trying to make ends meet, taking part time jobs while paying school fees so it’s extremely hard for me. Even if I can afford it, it’s just unethical for her to do this. Also, the contract does not say that she can increase my rent mid-contract.
However, if I refuse, can she deny me basic things such as using the fridge and washing machine? My specific rights to use them are not stated in the contract. But contract states my rent is inclusive of utilities. If she does that, does it violate any law? Because it feels like blackmail/threatening if she does that.
