I have recently encountered in a situation that has caused my significant and frustration with an estate agent/.
We have worked together for over ten years, during which I have always trusted him to manage my property (rental) with professionalism and integrity. Unfortunately, the recent events have severely caused my frustration and eroded the trust with the agent.
During the marketing of the unit, I have handed over all the keys (including the spare keys) to him, trusting him that he would sort and managed them appropriately.
He successfully found a tenant for the unit, and completed the handover on my behalf. However, the subsequent handling of the keys has been nothing short of disappointing.
I was extremely disheartened by the multiple delays in the key handover process. When I requested the return of the remaining keys, and he informed me that some of the keys were “not functional.” Despite this, I insisted that all keys should be returned to me. After three follow-up requests (almost 3 weeks), he eventually provided me with the keys except the main door and glass door, which he had been handed over to the tenant.
As the property owner, I find it is a basic and reasonable expectation to keep a set of key especially for the main door and glass door to the entrance. He also failed to inform me before the handover.
I have no alternative but asked him for a tenant to duplicate a set and I was willing to pick them up myself and reimburse the tenant accordingly.
However, I was left waiting for more than 2 weeks with no progress. Each time I followed up, he informed me that the tenant was too busy to duplicate the keys. Frustrated by the lack of action, I sent a brief message asking, “Where are my keys?” & “I am very very upset”
He probably realised my frustration and quickly replied the next day that the keys are ready that week and offered to collect the keys on my behalf.
But by that point, my trust in him had been significantly compromised, and I did not respond.
As a result of this event, I would want to terminate his services.. Please advise how to proceed.
