It depends on the agreement you have with your agent.

If you had agreed to let your agent represent you in your purchase, I think it's only fair that you pay him his fair share of the commission.

Of course you can choose to deal with the Seller agent directly, but how do you think the Seller agent will work for your interest?

Hi there, nope you do not need to pay any agent fees.

Should you engage an agent to represent you, their role is to value add and ultimately help you to negotiate the price down. Eg $500K HDB resale flat, your agent comm is 1% = $5k.. if they can help you bring down by $10k, what is your real cost? *just food for thought* =)

In all circumstances, I would usually share that it is not about how much you pay, but how much value you get in return.

If the amount of commission you are paying is only relating to agency works like filing of documents and duties in administrative nature, there is always someone cheaper that the one you are dealing with at the moment, however, if you are looking at proper consultancy works where there will be follow ups on situations, advises given and etc, I believe that the amount of commission payable can actually be even higher than the usual rates a professional will charge.
