My parents (age 64 & 66) owns a fully paid (with cpf) 4 room hdb. If the current hdb sells at $350k and there is a balance $160k after refunding back to cpf their principal + accurred interest (approx $190k).. are they able to keep the balance $160k for purchase of next flat? They did not pledge their current flat to hdb.

Hi,

As long as they have met their basic retirement sum amount individually after the sale, the balance $160k cash can be used for the next purchase. Their individual basic retirement sum amount should be $77.5k and $69.5k respectively, so as long as the cpf refund and retirement account amount covers that, the amount in excess can be used for next property.

It's best to give CPF a call, and double check IF and how much do they need to refund to CPF in order to fulfil the prevailing CPF policies regarding their basic retirement sum.
